Manual J Load Calculation

Building Basics

Higher ceilings increase the air volume requiring conditioning

South and west-facing buildings have higher cooling loads from solar gain

Disclaimer: This is a simplified Manual J load calculation estimate using adjusted square footage methodology. Results are typically within 10-15% of full Manual J software for standard residential homes. For code-required permit documentation, use ACCA-approved software (Wrightsoft, CoolCalc, Elite RHVAC). Not a substitute for a licensed HVAC engineer's analysis on complex or unusual structures.

What Is a Manual J Calculation?

Manual J is the national ANSI standard for residential HVAC sizing. It calculates how much heating and cooling a building actually needs - not what a rule of thumb guesses. A Manual J calculation determines the peak heating load (how fast the building loses heat in winter) and the peak cooling load (how fast it gains heat in summer) for a specific building at specific design conditions.

The ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) developed Manual J 8th Edition as the ANSI-recognized national standard. It is required by the International Residential Code (IRC), the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), and California Title 24 before issuing mechanical permits.

The Complete J-S-T-D Design Sequence

A properly designed HVAC system follows four ACCA steps in sequence. Each one depends on results from the step before it.
