You need 0.0016 tons of AC per square foot. In general, for every 600 sq ft, you need 1 ton of AC. This is a general estimate.

This rule of thumb states that the maximum heating capacity required for your comfort cooling application is 1.7X the cooling load. For example, if the cooling capacity required is 30 tons (360,000 btus), then the maximum heating capacity required would be 612,000 btus (1.7 x 360,000).

Simply divide the BTUs by 12,000 to calculate the tonnage of your unit. For example, if your air conditioner is 36,000 BTUs, you have a 3-ton unit. Some manufacturers bury tonnage or BTU information in their model numbers. Look for an even, two-digit number between 18 and 60.
